It’s fall: Time to cut back, remove, and treat buckthorn along the FEC trails and entrances. But this is no ordinary stewardship day! Stewards will learn about the crucial role of forestry in Wisconsin's history, what it's like to work as a forester or a naturalist, and how you can use some of these invasives management tactics in your own backyard.
You'll gain wisdom and insight into sustainable forest management in Wisconsin and learn tips for identifying trees, plants, and birds. Enjoy stories about what it's like to have a green career in forestry while you improve the Forest and adjacent habitats.
This stewardship activity is led by FEC board member and retired DNR forester Mary Ann Buenzow and volunteer naturalist Danielle Pahlisch.
Volunteers can expect to use hand tools such as clippers or shovels to remove buckthorn. We'll bag it up and make sure the trails are clear and safe for visitors. Whether you're a weed-out veteran or volunteering for the first time, everyone is welcome.
Please note: We will mostly be working on trails and paved areas, but there may be hazards such as uneven ground, loose logs or branches, and fallen leaves.
The Forest Exploration Center will supply hand tools and garbage bags.
Volunteers should bring work gloves and wear sturdy footwear, along with dressing for the weather. We will work in clear, cloudy, or drizzly conditions.
All volunteers must sign the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Waiver. You can print it out and bring it along, or fill one out onsite.
If you are registering as more than 2 people, please register separately. Children ages 8 and up may be registered if accompanied by an adult. Contact info@forestexplorationcenter.org with questions.
